UPDATED FOR 2017

The Vocal Skills Lab is a recurring workshop series for intermediate and advanced singers looking to expand their range of vocal expression in a small ensemble context. This iteration of the Lab will focus on breath and group singing as activities for wellness. Participants will learn polyphonic songs of Georgia and Bulgaria and receive training in vocal technique and listening skills. Every class includes an optional extended warmup for those wanting additional training. The Lab is open to singers of all ages and genders.

Caitlin Tabancay Austin studied Bulgarian singing with Tzvetanka Varimezova at UCLA. A regular member of Kitka from 2008-2016, Austin worked with master singers, directed select projects, and led workshops. In 2015 she studied with Nato Zumbadze and Carl Linich in the Republic of Georgia. She has performed with ensembles throughout the bay area, including Gaude, Volti, Cappella SF, Ramon and Jessica, Euouae, and SF Choral Artists; she has worked with Sven Olbash in Gregorian chant and early polyphony. She plays in Iron Henry, the Austin-Tabancay Family Band, and sometimes 20 Minute Loop. In 2012 she interned at Double Edge Theatre in Massachusetts. This winter she composed music for Theater Mundi’s The Maids. Austin currently studies therapeutic massage and bodywork. She holds a BA in Music History from UCLA.
